In Ontario, because the majority of children apparently do not get enough exercise, the Ministry of Education has mandated that all classes must do 20 minutes of DVPA (daily vigourous physical activity). When the weather is decent we usually go outside and play Chuck the Chicken, Highlander or other such running games. Now that the weather has started to become unsettled (read rainy and cold) we are doing our DVPA in the classroom.
My middle school classroom of grade 7 and 8’s is chock full of furniture. 25 large school desks and chairs, teaching table, teacher desk, guided reading table, computer table, another rectangle table that apparently is used to store things (read its where I dump stuff I am not sure what to do with yet) and filing cabinets. This much furniture does not leave a lot of room for physical activity. Where am I going with this you may ask?
Well, for our DVPA, and to slide in a dance mark for reporting, we do Zumba fitness. I have downloaded some popular songs from Youtube, such as, Party Rock, Waka Waka and Gangnam style that people have choreographed some fitness dances to. They look just like a Zumba dance class you would take in person but it is projected onto my Smartboard so the class can follow it. We push all the desks to the sides of the room so we have a clear area in the middle and away we go.
At first the boys were a little hesitant to move much but most of the girls are on board. The boys became a little more enthusiastic when I told them that next week I was going to start assessing their active participation and their dancing style. For the most part, we have fun, dance and laugh, a lot. One of the boys found the accompanying picture and sent it to me on Edmodo. He thought it was funny and that I would appreciate it too. As you can see, I totally did. I’m sharing it with you all.
